Next
air brakes

the sigh of the air brakes
just before the train starts

they really hate to be in motion

not so much the rumbling rattling
bumping screaming screetching
rush of wheels down
dark nasty tunnels

but the boredom of grey steel rails
chasing mile after stupid mile
of themselves always in pairs

can’t they think of something
else to do?

the air brakes a sullen gang
enjoy nothing better than to bring
a cram-packed hulk ten-car rush-hour train
to a sudden halt bump       and

silence

you don’t notice the gurgling
… ‘til it stops

what was it?

and the brakes heave
another heavy sigh

motion again

boredom and noise
