he stood in the road
it was his religion

I am invulnerable
I am steadfast

speeding traffic
braking and swerving
carefully preserved
his zone of sanctity

he was invulnerable
he was steadfast

then came a car
whose unsanctified occupants
intertwined and caressing
their bodies neither
invulnerable nor steadfast

only the car
lunging forward
refused to observe
the man’s religion
